Indians score big win over Lyman Hall !!!
Webster’s Dictionary defines the term ‘Indian Giver’ as: n.- one who gives something to another and then takes or demands it back.
Last Friday night on Kavanaugh Field, the Guilford Indians raised the above referenced act, to an art form. As the gracious host, Guilford spotted the visiting Trojans the opening touchdown, and a follow-up field goal. In fairly short order, the Indians found themselves on the wrong end of a 9-3 scoreboard at the half; courtesy of Lyman Hall’s hard running halfback Joe DeSandre.
But just as in their previous two games, the Indians came back out for the second half…..on a mission. Guilford was determined to take back those opening 9 points, and then some. The defense, who had such a seemingly difficult time containing the slashing Lyman Hall halfback, indeed found a way. In fact, John Loricco jump started the effort when he snuffed out a misguided Trojan punt attempt, which gave Guilford the ball on the opposition’s 31 yard line. Just a couple of plays later, Will Stitilis found himself in the right place at the right time. An Ethan Curry fastball intended for Brendan Six, ricocheted right into Stitilis’ mitts as he streaked into the end zone. With Adam Dear’s contribution of an extra point (in addition to his first half field goal), Guilford jumped out to a 10-9 lead.
Of course, Stitilis wasn’t done yet, and added another I-N-T to his resume on the Trojans next short lived possession. On Guilford’s next play another shot from the Curry Cannon hit Ryan Gill who, between two Lyman Hall defenders, hauled in a spectacular catch to further fire up the Guilford faithful. Four plays later, the Curry-Gill connection struck again, in the form of a patented Ethan Curry weak side roll out with a strike down the middle to a waiting Ryan Gill, in the end zone. In just over seven minutes, the Indians rang up 14 unanswered points, to make the score 17-9 with Guilford pulling away.
But Lyman Hall wasn’t quite done just yet. Following the Indians kickoff, the Trojans marched the length of the field; with DeSandre capping off the drive with an answering touchdown of his own. And just for good measure, Lyman Hall converted a two point play to tie up the score 17-17. If last week’s game was the game of the week, this wasn’t a bad sequel.
Of course the boys in green weren’t done yet either. And nowhere does that Webster’s definition say anything about giving the gift back, again. So they didn’t. Mssrs. Curry and Stitilis got together one more time for the game winner. And for the first time in this young team’s 2009 season, they got to enjoy the Victory Formation.
